An Tairseachúlacht Bhuan agus Múnlú na Suibiachta i Nuafhilíocht na Gaelainne (le Tríona Ní Shíocháin)
In this paper, a close reading is made of representations of the in-between in the work of three major Irish language poets: Máirtín Ó Direáin, Seán Ó Ríordáin and Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill. It is argued that the post-colonial discourses of these poets depict a state of permanent liminality (Turner, 1969, Szakolzcai, 2000, Thomassen, 2014), of existence within a limitless anti-structure without end. Of particular interest here is how this experience of permanent liminality moulds the subject and generates techniques of self (Foucault, 1988), borne of the liminal, that form the modern subject. Thus, it is argued, that the works of these poets touch upon the very genesis of modern subjectivity, and that their works therefore constitute a poetic theoretical framework of immense importance to our understanding of subject formation in modernity.
